It provides a nostalgic look at Central London’s past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites.The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England’s archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts.The book shows Central London as it once was, from its ancient streets and alleys to its grand churches and commercial buildings. At its heart is the City of Westminster, the centre of government, religion and entertainment, with many theatres, cinemas, cafés, restaurants and pubs, shopping and, most importantly, 1,000 years of history. Around it, the city’s centre extends from East London to Southwark, south of the River Thames, and Kensington to the west.
