Jimmie Rodgers (1897-1933) is zonder twijfel de grondlegger van de country. Zijn bijnaam Mississippi Blue Yodeler omschrijft precies waardoor hij bekend werd. Hij was niet de eerste die jodelde op platen, maar bij hem was het jodelen net zo belangrijk als de tekst. In zijn veel te korte carriÞre van slechts zes jaar was hij de eerste die hillbilly-country, gospel, jazz, blues, pop en folk mengde.
