Large numbers of emigrants and immigrants passed through the city and the industrialised Victorian Liverpool was one of the wealthiest cities in Britain, despite also having areas of great poverty. Despite industrial decline after the Second World War, Liverpool is a commercial and cultural hub today, attracting many to the regenerated city.
