Fashionable visitors led to the development of hotels and new housing and the population grew rapidly. The arrival of the railways brought more visitors, as well as a large locomotive engineering works, and the town became known as a major commercial centre. Neighbouring Hove, originally a small village, grew alongside its larger neighbour and today the city of Brighton and Hove is one of the largest conurbations in the south of England.
