DESCRIPTION

A History of Hamas
The history of Hamas told through the life of the commander behind the October 7th assault, Yahya Sinwar, the Eye of Gaza
Drawing on fifteen years of unprecedented access to Hamas leaders across Doha, Beirut, Istanbul, Gaza, and Tehran, Leila Seurat tells the life story of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of the October 7 attacks.

In October 2011, after 23 years in an Israeli prison, Yahya Sinwar was released from Israeli prison. No longer the young firebrand Sinwar has become a hardened strategist who spent over two decades building power from behind bars. Over the next few years he could climb his way to power, elected leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2017. He now governed two and a half million people under blockade, failing with successive attempts to break the siege. Then, in May 2021, Sinwar initiated the unprecedented the "Sword of Jerusalem" operation that issued an ultimatum to Israel and promised a bigger response.

This came on October 7th, 2023 with the Al-Asqua flood, that saw Hamas soldiers breaching the Israel's fortifications. This attack heralds a brutal response that saw the total devastation of Gaza. Sinwar himself was killed by Israeli forces on October 16, 2024.

Drawing on exclusive interviews with Sinwar's fellow prisoners, Hamas leaders across four continents, and internal documents rarely seen by outsiders, political scientist Leila Seurat reveals how one man's journey from prison cell to power reshaped Hamas-and ultimately triggered the most significant confrontation in decades.
