The Life of Oharu - The Criterion Collection

Kenji Mizoguchi directs this Japanese drama starring Kinuyo Tanaka. In 17th century Japan, lady-in-waiting Oharu (Tanaka) loses her honour when she falls in love with a man who is of a lower class than her. When Oharu's father finds out, he exiles her and forces her into a life of degradation and poverty. The cast includes Toshirô Mifune, Ichiro Sugai and Sadako Sawamura.
