While Antwerp may have been a sparsely populated city and its cultural life was not what it used to be in the time of Rubens and Jordaens, it was by no means a cultural wasteland. There were still things happening in the city on the Scheldt. There were bankers, trade was conducted, and industry thrived. And it showed. Antwerp still had an elite that commissioned architect Jan-Pieter Van Baurscheit “the Younger” to build magnificent rococo buildings on the Meir. There were still reputable painters and writers active in the city, and the musical life flourished as well. There were concerts in the city palaces of the elite, concerts, balls, and opera performances in the Tapestry Guildhall, and of course, music still filled the main churches of the city. Tobi would make his career in Antwerp and never felt the need to leave his city to make a decent living. In Antwerp, he found everything he needed to sustain himself with his music.
