It contains the quintet’s first studio session (on Side A), plus their first live session, which occupied Side B of the original LP. These selections were recorded at a club named The Strollers only a few weeks after the formation of the quintet. The club ambience is clearly noticeable and the horn of a passing car is also heard at one point during the bass intro of “Walking Carson Blues.” More titles from the live date at the Strollers exist and were issued in later years. “The Sage,” from the studio date, was later borrowed by Elmer Bernstein for use as the movie theme in his score for the film Sweet Smell of Success. This formation of the Chico Hamilton Quintet, which followed the trio with which he made his first studio recordings as a leader in 1953-53, would produce only two more studio sessions, in January 1856 and in February of 1956.
