She spent years filling various jobs before having the courage to make impromptu appearances at some local nightclubs. Finally in 1957 spirited by pianist Joe Marino, she quit her job and soon emerged as a praised and applauded singer by the audiences, winning soon her first professional contract as a guest vocalist on the television show Stars of Jazz, backed by the Paul Bley trio. As a consequence of her performance, she was offered to record forWorld Pacific Records.

On Just Before Dawn, her debut album, Pat sang eleven standard songs, some of them quite unusual, backed by cellist Fred Katz’s intimate approach to arranging and conducting, and by Joe Marino’s quartet. In both settings, she revealed herself as a vocalist with clarity of sound, style, sensitivity, and the ability to sing difficult songs, with the right accompaniment, resulting in this distinctive album, the first and only she recorded.

The remaining recordings come from two later appearances of Pat in Stars of Jazz, where she can be heard with the backing of the Keith Williams orchestra, and finally, alone with her favorite accompanist, Joe Marino.

―Jordi Pujol

Pat Healy, sings in all tracks accompanied by

PAUL BLEY Trio (#1-4): Paul Bley (p), Charlie Haden (b), Lenny McBrowne (d).
Recorded live at “Stars of Jazz” ABC-TV show, Hollywood, September 2, 1957
Orchestra Arranged & Conducted by FRED KATZ (#5-12): Vic Arno, Lou Raderman, Felix Slatkin, Marshall Sosson, Paul Shure, Jacques Gassselin, Sarah Kreindler, Joseph Quadri, Seymour Kramer, Eunice Wennermak, Miseha Russel, Israel Baker (violins); Alex Neiman, Allan Harshman (violas); George Neikrug, Eleanor Slatkin (cellos); Paul Horn (as, bcl, fl); Gerald Wiggins (p); John Pisano (g); Hal Gaylor (b); Chico Hamilton (d).
Recorded at Capitol Tower Studios, Hollywood, October 10, 1957

The JOE MARINO Quartet (#13-15): Joe Marino (p), Howard Roberts (g), Richard Von Holberg (b), Shelly Manne (d).
Recorded at Capitol Tower Studios, Hollywood, November 14, 1957

KEITH WILLIAMS Orchestra, with JOE MARINO on piano (#16-18): Johnny Audino, Jerry Kadovitz, Irving Bush, Oliver Mitchell (tp); Jesse Ray Heath, Ed Freudenberg, Sy Zelden (tb); Dick Gould (btb); Bill Carson (as, fl); Al Sepe (cl, ts); Teddy Lee (ts); John Bambridge (bar); Gene Estes (xylophone); Dennis Budimir (g); Francis James (b); John Lais (d).
Recorded live at “Stars of Jazz” ABC-TV show, Hollywood, November 4, 1957

JOE MARINO on piano (#19-22).
Recorde live at “Stars of Jazz” ABC-TV show, Hollywood, August 18, 1958

Bonus Tracks (#23-24):
Orchestra Conducted by BILLY VAUGHN.
Recorde in Los Angeles, April 30, 1959

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/7504/8033/files/orig_13074421_1915471_20250415082343.jpg?v=1759776470
