Arnaldo Cohen has put together a masterfully varied programme and even though most of the 31 tracks last less than three minutes, it never feels bitty. He seduces the ear right from the word go, with Cláudio Santoro's rollicking Paulistana No.4. Highlights are invidious, but don't miss out on the forlorn seediness of Valsa de Esquina No.1 from Francisco Mignone, the delightful excerpts from Octavio Pinto's Cenas Infantis suite (written to amuse his children), Francisca Gonzaga's Gaúcho, the Schumannesque Coeur blessé from Alexandre Levy or the utterly infectious Odeon from Ernesto Nazareth, a figure described by Villa-Lobos as \"the true incarnation of the Brazilian soul\". Cohen is an ideal advocate for this music, combining effortless virtuosity with an innate musicality that traverses the centuries with ease.
