Actually, for all the contrapuntal mastery on show, Magnard does allow himself the occasional waft of French country air (most notably in the perky scherzo entitled "Danses"), while the noble slow movement possesses a timeless, deep-rooted quality that can't fail to impress. Symphony 4 of 1911-13, on the other hand, is a score of consummate power, towering integrity and life-enhancing beauty. Again, the rustic scherzo brings the most immediately appealing invention, but the whole work unfolds with a thrilling sweep and gaunt inevitability that mark it out as one of the masterpieces of the French symphonic tradition. As on his companion disc of Magnard's First and Third Symphonies, Thomas Sanderling takes an unusually patient, dignified view of this music. The results are wholly convincing in their compelling lucidity and imposing, rough-hewn majesty, the overall approach intriguingly different from that of Jean-Yves Ossonce (whose altogether more thrusting interpretations of the Second and Fourth are housed on Hyperion). Excellent sound, as ever from BIS, and a hearty recommendation. --Andrew Achenbach
