With such a distinguished history, it's surprising that only a small number of composers have taken the guitar seriously. But the ones that have are well represented here, and could hardly find a better exponent for their music than one of the few guitarists to have made it into household-name status--John Williams. This disc contains a marvellous selection of highlights from previous recordings (going back to 1984) and some new material. The programme shows off every facet of Williams' musical personality, from the careful precision of the prelude from Bach's Lute Suite no. 4, through the innocent folksiness of O'Carolan's jig Planxty Madame Maxwellto the sultry sexiness of Piazzolla's tango Verano porteno. The inevitable Deer Hunter"Cavatina" is also included, as is the adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez--but the joy of the compilation is in the fascinating and brilliantly played lesser-known works. --Warwick Thompson
