In the active dialogue of the musical two cast, in constant give and take, listen and communicate, challenge and promote, the two ECHO jazz award winners Nils Wülker and Arne Jansen now invite us to their first joint duo album. The ten pieces on Closer are delightfully different and pleasantly surprising, tell exciting stories with new own compositions, interpretations from the repertoire of the two leaders and cover versions of some of their favorite pop and rock songs, from Nine Inch Nails to Ry X to The Blue Nile. With every sound, they take the listeners for themselves, accompany them like good friends on a journey through new and exciting soundscapes. Sometimes empathic and intimate, then again cineastically and atmospherically dense, from the ultimate reduction in duet to almost orchestral sound, the two exceptional musicians and close friends in music explore their commonalities and live out their peculiarities. Closer is hardly possible.

Even the opener is a statement: Johnny Cash's gloomy version of Hurt, in the original of Trent Reznor and his band Nine Inch Nails, served the two as inspiration for their very personal excursion, initially raw and direct, he boosts itself over just under three minutes with delays, reverb and distortion into pleasant intensity. It is a pleasure to listen to the two musicians to lose themselves in their sound worlds when they dedicate about the melody rush Nikas Dream, Wülker's daughter and only recently a highlight on Wülker's orchestral album Continuum, to its musical essence, less opulent, no bit less impressive. Even if they alternate in the role of soloist and companion, such as in the funky Deep Dive or their version of The Blue Niles melancholic Lets Go Out Tonight, their musical closeness transmits very directly. Beyond the Bavarian Sky, an anthemic new composition by Nils Wülker, completely pure with flugelhorn and acoustic guitar, is a bow to one of the most beautiful duo albums in recent jazz history: Pat Metheny and Charlie Hadens Beyond the Missouri Sky.

What we would be with on another important theme of the album: its great sound. Because Nils Wülker and Arne Jansen made no compromises at Closer: the album was recorded by Nils Wülker himself in his Ear Treat Studio in Munich, mixed by American Grammy winner Jay Newland, known for his work for Norah Jones, John Scofield and, of course, the aforementioned duo album Beyond the Missouri Sky, and finally astasterby Mark Wilthe one who got his Grammys for remaster from Miles Davis, Billie Holiday or Bob Dylan, at the New York Battery Studios. The whole is significantly more than the sum of the pieces, a versatility and abundance of sounds and moods that fascinates and touches alike. A real experience that you can share directly by just listening.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/7504/8033/files/orig_10445299_18553489_20240923023937.jpg?v=1776108549
