Having previously been a bus driver, Matt got his first break on television, being the featured vocalist with the BBC Show Band. This led to a contract with Decca (thanks also to the assistance of Winifred Atwell, who gave him his stage name - his real name is Terence Parsons), who released an album of Matt's interpretations of then current standards, an album that effectively disappeared without trace.
