Strictly adhering to the template laid down by your debut album isn't the most adventurous way to approach its follow-up. But in the case of intensely disturbed Scandinavians Psycore, it's probably just as well, given that the debut album in question, Your Problem, was a potent blend of menacingly hardcore guitar riffs, spoken-word/rap and savagely chilling lyrical assaults. I'm Not One Of Us is just a harder hitting and more fearful version. The dark, sub-bass rumbles of "A Week", horrendously complimented by singer/rapper Jaan's clinical pronunciation as he reads snippets of his secret diary--"Saturday was soaked in passive stress / in darkness / in madness."--are typical of Psycore's less than cheery disposition. By their own admission the album, which was the product of dark times, is more self-analysing than a shrink's couch, and the result is fairly brutal. But then any band that namechecks Thelonious Monk, Metallica, Aphex Twin and Run DMC--as they do on the aptly titled "You Made A Monster"--was never going to be a friendly beast, which is why this is hardcore uneasy listening at its best.--Dan Gennoe.
