His story spans decades and includes collaborations with a list that reads like a who s who of modern music, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Oscar Peterson, Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin and Herbie Hancock to name just a few. Asere s creative, pioneering repertoire is deeply respectful of Cuba s musical traditions, but has an exciting contemporary edge blessed with inventive song writing and a soulful groove. Billy Cobham was born in Panama and moved to New York with his parents at the age of three. The Billy Cobham & Asere project is part of a process in which Billy is reconnecting with his Latin roots, exploring and rediscovering his natural musical and cultural heritage. Billy and Asere s thrilling musical relationship is fired by mutual respect, spontaneity and enjoyment. A Latin Soul is the story of their awesome collaboration.

REVIEW
A bumper package of no less than three movies and an audio CD adding up to three hours of entertainment, A Latin Soul traces the relationship between Cobham and the Afro-Cuban band Asere. For those who only know Cobham as the machismo, muscle ripping engine room to the Mahavishnu Orchestra or the Jack Bruce band, the softly spoken gentle man of these films will be something of a revelation. On Alma Latina Cobham explains how his own Latin roots were crushed at an early age. The three year old Cobham came to New York with his Spanish speaking parents in the winter of 47 from Panama at a time when, in Cobham s own words Caribbean Latin people were even more second class than black people who spoke English . So in order to fit in, little William s family expunged anything from their life that made them different. So these DVDs mark Cobham s search for his past, his family, a world he barely knew. To watch a man in his 60s battle with the language and the rhythmical nuances of Cuban music is humbling and inspirational; like Billy says he s struggling to regain it before I m dead . And he fares pretty well. The heart of the CD though is the live performance: gentle, melodic, acoustic and organic (although innovative in their approach to son Asere have a canny ear for a commercial reference), the band swing easily with Cobham who is introspective and self effacing and happy just to fit in though not without the occasional flourish of fire when the passion is upon him. Cobham fans will be fascinated, as will Womad aficionados. --Andy Robson, Jazzwise July 2007
