Over a career that spanned five decades, he was equally comfortable playing traditional Delta blues in the style of his legendary stepfather, Robert Johnson, as well as the urban sound of Chicago blues and rhythm & blues alongside artists like Little Walter, all while maintaining a style and sound unmistakably his own. He was the ultimate sideman--whether playing behind a piano or a harmonica player.

This first volume spans almost two decades of selections from Lockwood's musical output, beginning with his 1941 recordings with Dr. Clayton, and continuing through his 1950s recordings with Sunnyland Slim, Little Walter, Eddie Boyd,and several others. Volume 2 also features some of his excellent duo recordings with Otis Spann as well as Sonny Boy Williamson Checker sides.

Lockwood was one of the most sophisticated and advanced Blues guitarists, beautifully blending the sounds of the Delta with swing and jazz. Listen to his jazzy swing on Little Walter's "One More Chance With You" and his adventurous, inspired, and sometimes aggressive lead playing, particularly on the Sunnyland Slim sides.

He was born on March 27, 1915 in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas--a small community about 25 miles west of Helena--Lockwood began playing the organ in his father's church. After his parents divorced, Robert Johnson moved in with Lockwood's mother for a decade, on and off. Lockwood, who was only four years younger than Johnson, was deeply influenced by him. Due to their personal and professional relationship, Lockwood became known as "Robert Junior," a nickname he carried for the rest of his life, though he often expressed his dislike for it.

CAST & CREW
Director:

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/7504/8033/files/orig_14061461_13641354_20250915071250_2e6d4972-1009-4be3-b43a-b7ed357acd11.jpg?v=1762304118
