Pernice carried the same tone through to his work with the Pernice Brothers, and turned up the volume a bit on the self-titled album from Chappaquiddick Shyline. Now, on his solo debut--well, the first album issued under his own name--Pernice mines familiar territory, but with a lush sound not often found in his previous work. The melodies and lyrics are as winsomely maudlin as ever: "So help me Lord, get me stoned again," he sings on "Prince Valium"; "Bum Leg" opens with the explanation that "I got this scar above my eye from a dirty little shit who tried to love me underneath the bridge"; and "Second Semester Lesbian" finds the narrator despairing over a confusing college romance. Pernice may be doomed to remain an obscure gem of a songwriter, a Nick Drake without the cachet, but those who have been turned onto the Massachusets tunesmith wouldn't trade his songs for the world. --Randy Silver

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/7504/8033/files/orig_13095526_19310025_20241114080003.jpg?v=1731657925
