REVIEW
Originally given a UK-only release by Glitterhouse - one of many labels, major and minor, the criminally underrated singer-songwriter has called home - Basement Dreams was not so much an album as an assortment of songs: 23 then, 33 now (the 10 bonus tracks are mostly unedited live selections) bookended by two a cappells songs sung by his dad. There were home recordings, eight-track studio cuts and odds and ends recorded with various friends. What held them together and made this so compelling was the tone, the simplicity and economy with which Casal approached each song and naturalness with which he inhabits them. And some of the best songs he's written are here - among them Outskirts and Me And Queen Sylvia, pieces of singer songwriter perfection - and some excellent covers (Widow Maker; Oil In My Lamp) on which Angie McKenna duets.
