Structured around one or several aircraft carriers, the whole is protected by anti-submarine fighting and anti-air escort vessels and is followed by a squadron convoy loaded with at-sea replenishment. Since the sixties, the French National Marine has made up such groups; the new Clemenceau and Fouch aircrafts carriers were often accompanied by recast escort vessels called Tartar, named after the anti-air system equipping the Kersaints and Dupetit-Thourars to mention but few. As long way from its home port and sometimes in a hostile zone it is thus necessary to replenish the group with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and fresh supplies. This is the role of the supply tankers: the first modern buildings to be equipped for this purpose were La Seine and La Saône.
