Lucky Novak is the latest project of British alto saxophonist Tim Lowerson og Norwegian bassist Ture Ringereide. These two have been cooperating musically for several years. Their previous album with the band Sounds of the Unexpected, released in 2012, was called «a sure fire winner» by respected jazz critic Roald Helgheim in the Norwegian daily paper Dagsavisen. Joining them in Lucky Novak are pianist Sten Hermundstad and drummer Harald Botha. Hermundstad is a versatile musician with a background in jazz, improvisation and contemporary classical music. He has just released an EP with the Viennese label Audiokult who refer to him as a «a musical genius. The next up and coming artist in the neoclassical scene». Drummer Botha is also a versatile musician and plays with The Oslo Symphony Orchestra as well as various recording sessions asan in-demand studio musician in Oslo. How do you describe Lucky Novak's music? One critic claimed that Lucky Novak was the sound of a garage band playing Sun Ra. It's uncertain whether this was meant as a compliment, but the band themselves liked the description. And it does capture something essential about the band's music. Notwithstanding their serious musical ambitions, they prefer to play with energy and feel than pursue technical perfection. Their aim is to create a strong musical expression. If you're looking for the band's source of inspirations, here's a few: Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Duane Eddy, Get the Blessing, The Libertines and Captain Beefheart. With their album The Lucky Novak Syndrome they manage to combine these diverse elements whilst at the same time creating their own distinct musical universe. Six of the seven tracks on The Lucky Novak Syndrome were recorded during two days in February 2014. The band rented the front room of an old wooden house round the corner from the saxophonist's home and recorded everything live. At the end of the two day session they had 70 tracks to choose from. One more song was recorded one month later in March 2014 at a school gymnasium in Oslo. For the occasion Lowerson and Ringereide formed a 10-piece brass band with musicians from a local jazz big band and from the Oslo Symphony Orchestra. At both sessions the band wanted to capture the spontaneity of a live concert. The Lucky Novak Syndrome is released on GOYO Records. This is the label affiliated with musicians collective Go On Your Own (GOYO), a group of underground musicians from Oslo with backgrounds in jazz and electronica.
