Bob is probably one of the best boogie woogie pianists on the planet. Into his 80s, he can still kick ass. Bob Baldori, on second piano, also sang and played blues harp on a few songs. Inspired by this combination, I called John Dickie and suggested we try some of this ourselves. In the twenty odd years that John and I have known one other, we've always mutually liked \"Roll 'Em Pete\" by Pete Johnson and Big Joe Turner. So we started there and worked up about thirty songs, out of which we picked our favorite thirteen. The recordings have a marked \"N'awlins\" feel, with direct tributes to at least four New Orleans pianists. As well, James Booker, Dr. John, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Pete Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Albert Ammons are all referenced consciously or un-consciously referenced. John shines on these sparser arrangements, demonstrating his musicianship on harp, mandolin and electric slide guitar. And, he sings his ass off. In the musical blues space of these songs, join us on this ragged gravel road, walking south to the Crescent City, suspended in the footsteps of those who blazed the way before us.
