In an age that loved ostentation, the number of trumpeters employed by a court was a sign of power and wealth, with princes vying with one another to attract the finest virtuosos to their palaces and castles. Originally scored for oboe and violin, Vivaldi’s Concerto in B flat major is heard here in a later transcription for the trumpet. During his lifetime, George Philipp Telemann was almost more famous in Germany than his contemporaries Bach and Handel. Having already established himself as a remarkable trumpet virtuoso in his teens – a rare and extraordinary feat given the physical demands of the instrument – Sergei Nakariakov turns his attention to a recital largely made up of baroque reworkings. the Agnus Dei from Bach’s Mass in B Minor is beautifully shaped on the flugel horn and this is where the Russian heart is given the fullest reign.
