Twenty years later, many criss-crossings of their paths behind them, they finally performed together in 1997 in the context of the Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, with whom they have recorded and toured together since. A few years ago they co-led a quartet for a single concert with a rhythm section of Noel Kupersmith on bass and Chad Taylor on drums, McPhee exclusively playing alto saxophone. And then in 2002, after an exhausting American bus tour by the Tentet, twenty-five years after their first encounter, McPhee and Brötzmann entered the studio with their Tentet cohorts Kent Kessler on bass and Michael Zerang on percussion, carrying with them the vague producerly notion of recording some 'ballads.' During the Tentet tour I asked Brötzmann what he had in mind in that respect. Standards? Originals? Free ballads? 'Na ja,' he said. 'We will see.
