Notwithstanding the Rosicrucian interest in Wagner’s music, Satie sought a completely different path, in a quest which was not moved by Anti-Wagnerism, but simply by an inner prompting to find a voice of his own, and one which could express his French inspiration too. However, Wagner’s influence is still explicitly acknowledged, since "Le fils des étoiles" has, as a subtitle, “Wagnérie Kaldéenne”, i.e. “Chaldean Wagnery”. The piano version of the three Preludes was issued in 1896, the pieces having been premiered in 1892. The score is as esoteric as the text it frames, with hermetic expressive indications and suggestive symbolistic allusions.
