Unlike Haydn however, he stayed in one place, Vienna, for the whole of his working life and this is reflected in an easeful urbanity to his writing, a sense of charm and polish. These are works which fall incredibly easy on the ear, and if they lack the odd twists and turns of Haydn's more singular inventiveness, they are still worth listening to (especially at Naxos' excellent value budget price)--if not in their own right, then as background to the Haydn or Mozart symphonies. The Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia is not a period instrument ensemble, but brings an authentic Eastern European sound to the proceedings--the oboes, for example, are plaintive and richly penetrating and the trumpets have a particularly bright and flashing sound. Uwe Grodd keeps everything moving along with energy and spirit, and the overall effect is one of great charm. --Warwick Thompson
