They dodge opportunities to discuss their influences, refuse to flaunt their knack for clever melodies, and shy away from the title 'musician'. Guitarist Ryan Short explains, 'I don't consider myself a guitar player.I just own a guitar. However, I also own a lot of records, so I think I have a decent idea of what a proper song should sound like.' This approach is a rational but radical departure from contemporary music trends emphasizing style over substance. It's an approach that allows The Hourly Radio to deliver both. For the band, subtle confidence yields urgent results, and sleek songwriting speaks volumes in place of their characteristic personal reservations. In articulate, poignant music, The Hourly Radio eliminates unnecessary guitar heroics or solo wankery and rely on the strength of their melodies alone. Vocalist/guitarist Aaron Closson confesses, 'I'm a reluctant guitarist, as every guitarist should be. I play what is required. Any more would be distasteful.' The result sounds effortless, natural and immediately satisfying. Melding their dark guitar textures with infectious hooks, the band offers the perfect marriage of melody and atmosphere. The rhythm section, made up of Adam Vanderkolk on drums and Tim Jansen on bass, add the driving force behind the bands infectious sound. 'We try to punctuate the impact of the melody,' jokes Vanderkolk, 'And sometimes we run clean over it.' In January of 2005 they released their debut EP - Lure of the Underground - to a SOLD OUT home crowd in Dallas' Gypsy Tea Room. The show was talked about and written about for months and the buzz of this band continues to grow. In June of 2005 they played a showcase in New York City's lower east side to a capacity crowd at The Delancey and this fall will be touring with Stellastarr*.
