Working slowly and methodically, his music often moves from the introspective to the overwhelming within seconds: teetering on the brink of a seismic upheaval, or maybe looking back at some such incident. A late developer, his String Quartet (1959) combines the rhythmic drive of Bartók with the elusiveness of Webern, a satisfying union that could have been taken further. Instead Kurtág went through almost 20 years of mainly vocal miniatures--cryptic, often pungent shards of thought that provoke as they bemuse. The 12 Microludes (1978) exemplifies this approach, a sequence of pen portraits from a latter-day Goya. Though compact, Officium breve (1988) reflects the broader thinking of Kurtág since the late 1980s, creating an intense soundscape for the listener to wander through. Together with the anything but celebratory tribute piece Aus der Ferne III (1991), this disc gives you the essential Kurtág--persuasively interpreted, and endlessly absorbing. --Richard Whitehouse\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Rarewaves","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":56089343132022,"sku":"0028945325828","price":13.94,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0092\/7504\/8033\/files\/stand_289374_jpg_6821436f-e6ba-4dcc-92eb-230ab047006f.jpg?v=1755189523","url":"https:\/\/www.rarewaves.com\/products\/0028945325828-musik-for-streichinstrumente","provider":"Rarewaves.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
