O.

AMAZON
Ravel in Berlin? Actually the combination works a treat when the music-making is as refined yet focussed as here. Boulez has long been a Ravel conductor of distinction, not afraid to indulge the music when it borders on the naive or child-like. The Mother Goose ballet, heard complete, exemplifies his approach: you'd expect the music to sound this good, but its tenderness and imagination banish any thought of Boulez as a cold-blooded technician. Rhapsodie Espagnole too finds a perfect balance between atmosphere and virtuosity; the opening heavy with anticipation, the closing "Féria" giving mere conducting technocrats a lesson in control. Of the two orchestrations from the piano cycle Miroirs, Alborada del Grazioso is well known and great fun; Un barque sur l'ocean is still little heard, but a gem of impressionist colour and dark undercurrents, which Boulez has long championed. Boléro is all you would expect--formidably contained, keeping the lid on the excitement until the closing bars go AWOL. A fitting climax to one of the best Ravel discs in the catalogue. --Richard Whitehouse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/7504/8033/files/orig_584378_21078856_20250304074259.jpg?v=1775084038
